As a bid farewell to our pop-up shop, Designers Marketplace decided to go out with a bit of a bang and celebrate the occasion by inviting everyone down for a huge art collaboration.

For one night and one day only we teamed up with an exciting bunch of creative geniuses such as THE WEDNESDAY PROJECT, SURFACE//PHILIA, THE CLOUD COMMISSION, MALARKY, AUDREY NEWHOUSE, TUBBYPHUNK and a bunch of others for an evening of AWESOME music aand free-style drawing.

What a fun night we all had...and we're thinking there will be many more where that one came from!

FAREWELL POP-UP SHOP!

Designers Marketplace Pop-Up Shop is bidding farewell to its stay in the Albert Road unit after 6 weeks of representing and flogging glorious wares from artist and designers around the region. To celebrate the occasion we have decided to have a bit of a do and go out with a bang!

For one night and one day only we are teaming up with an exciting bunch of creative geniuses for one massive art workshop.

THE WEDNESDAY PROJECT, CHICKADEE, THE CLOUD COMMISSION, MALARKY, MR.OWL, AUDREY NEWHOUSE, NIALL GRIEVES, TUBBYPHUNK and a bunch of others will be collaborating on a mass scale, getting their creative juices flowing and offering the chance for you to get invloved!

Large scale drawing and painting galore!...with a little bit of badge making on the side (would be rude not too). We'll also have wine, tea, coffee, maybe a biscuit or two and some tasteful tunes.

We just require a smile at the door, a drawing tool in your hand and for you to leave your mark in our visitors book! All work produced may be developed into some sort of young hip publication so we'll keep you posted!

Designers Marketplace Open Air Market in association with Middlesbrough Fashion Week

This month we will be seeing the arrival of Middlesbrough's first ever fashion week. Launching on Thursday 29th April for one week there will various events, shows and special shopping offers taking place all over the town centre.

Designers Marketplace has been offered the chance to take centre stage with an open air market in the town centre itself on Saturday 1st May from 9.30am onwards. The full timetable of events will be heavily advertised across regional publications and media and we'll be expecting a high volume of visitors.

Designers Marketplace will be presenting 12 stalls selling one off designer maker products such as fashion, accessories, ceramics, lifestyle gifts and photography.

Shop Update & Event Timetable...may be the longest post in the world?!

Designers Marketplace Pop-Up Shop has now been open for two weeks and is proving to be just a wee bit of a success for the yokils and all that have been involved thus far! New stock is arriving weekly and we are packed to the rafters with wonderful products, there is even talk of an extension on our stay in the empty space. Running alongside the shop we also have an exciting exhibition space which is continuously changing hands throughout the months of March and April. JAMES ADAIR. Two week artist in residence.

An exhibition of new works by emerging artist James Adair.The artist’s current work can be described as a visual splendor, loosely derived from flora and fauna. His vibrant and bold use of colour and patterns create work that is as much playful and free as it is organized and rhythmic. James has been our artist in residence here at pop up shop from Thurs 4th March and will be finishing this Saturday 22nd March with an art sale of his work which includes the series of new pieces. Painting directly on to original 60s/70s floral wallpaper and a series of beautifully painted canvases are just some of the works that will be on show.

AJ GARRETT'S BAD ART REVOLUTION: The Bad Art Academy

An interactive exhibition for all from Operation: Bad Art - an ongoing project with the target of perishing all neurotic concepts associated with drawing. Drawings from Operation Bad Art workshops will be on show. Using only marker pens, white paper and cheap crayons under conditions that don't allow for fine technique or thinking too much, everyone is equal. Pictures emerge that are fun, unique, interesting, sometimes strange but always vibrant and personal. Here's your chance to take part in the Bad Art revolution - dare you do your worst?

SAMANTHA RAMSAY. Static exhibition.
Samantha Ramsay is a fine artist whose work is initially inspired by cities, architectural structures and building plans. With an aim to create works to excite and stimulate rather than painting from literal observations. Some pieces border between painting and sculpture; with angles of jutting out wood, reworked layers of oils, gloss and fabrics, experimentation with the physicality of paint. Then de-constructing areas back to reveal raw canvas beneath the complex surface - a process of construction and de-construction.

Monday 4th April - Saturday 17th April.
ADAM CLARKE. Two week artist in residence. Since graduating in 2006 from a BA Fine Art, Adam has continued to investigate a number of strands within his practice; namely painting, drawing and critical theory. Formally trained as a painter, of late his studio practice has focused heavily upon drawing. It is belief that his emerging interest in ‘time’ and its bearing upon work has led him to drawing. Adam will be working on a large scale practicing formal exercises such as line, form and colour.

LIVE PRINT WORKSHOP. NICOLA PARKIN of The Wednesday Project collaborating with THE CLOUD COMMISSION (And no doubt a few others!) Two day printing workshop, view their exhibition of prints and watch the team practice their skills in different forms of printing.

Please make sure artwork is mounted (not framed) securely on card/ticket card, and labelled correctly on the back with your name and the price of the piece. It has to be A2 and under in size to fit on our stands.

20% commission will be taken on sold items, you will be contacted if and when your piece sells. You can drop off your work and pull out at any point throughout the 7 week period we will be running the 'Portfolio Sell Off' project. Each piece can be photographed, priced and shown on FB to get those punters in!

Pop-Up Shop Opening with The Cloud Commission, Malarky and Mr.Owl

Ok, so!...Designers Marketplace Pop-Up Shop opened its doors yesterday and wants to thank all who made it down! It was a great day with lots of sales and happy customers! And a MASSIVE HUGE THANKS to The Cloud Commission, Malarky and Mr.Owl for working their magic on our windows...pure awesomeness! Not forgetting a big thanks to Mamma Dots for the much loved cupcakes too!

DM Two Month Pop-Up Shop for March-April!

For a limited period of two months Designers Marketplace has the opportunity to move into empty property space within Middlesbrough town centre taking its usual ‘one day market’ format a step further.

Throughout March and April regional artists and designers are offered the exciting opportunity to sell and promote their wares inside the shop for one flat rate per week. No commission is taken on sold goods.

Continuing its work on the promotion and support of regional creative businesses, Designers Marketplace Two Month Pop-Up Shop will also be presenting a mixture exciting events such as open photography competitions, rotating art exhibitions, design exhibitions, art-jams, workshops, portfolio sell-offs and seminars. The store will open its doors as an active, stimulating and exciting space to spend time in. So keep you’re eyes peeled for weekly event invites! Designers Marketplace will be advertising this event in local press and hopes to continue attracting its following of over a thousand visitors.

We will be selling high end designer maker products such as...FASHION . ACCESSORIES . ART . PRINTS . PHOTOGRAPHY . INTERIOR PRODUCTS . TEXTILES . JEWELLERY . ILLUSTRATIONS . GRAPHIC PRODUCTS . SELLING IN STORE:

• One initial payment of £40 for your first week, which is the same price of a stall at our usual one day market. If you wish to sell for a longer period of time the rate is reduced down to quater of the initial payment, per week. No commision is taken on sold wares.

• The shop will be run by staff to look after your wares, just as a normal shop would be run.• There is no minimum or maximum time frame on how long you can to sell for over the two month period. You may pull out whenever you want.

• No commission will be taken on the products you sell, just a flat rate each week. The amount of space you are allocated will depend on the type and size of product you sell. I.e. a table top surface for jewellery, set measured wall space for artwork, rail for fashion etc... Details will be given upon request or booking.

Planned opening is for Monday 1st March for two months. If you want to secure a place please email at your earliest convenience so we do not miss this opportunity to retail as the Designers Marketplace collective with Middlesbrough Council. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Having just returned from a two week hard earned break, this is the first chance we've had chance to wish all of our fans, followers and buyers a very merry Christmas and happy new year! We'd like to thank you all for the support over the past year since the market began running in November 2008, may there be many more years of supporting new creative businesses to come!

We would also like to thank everyone who turned up for our Christmas market at Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt on Sunday 29th November....it was a hugely successful day with 1,100 visitors and all 47 stall holders selling most of their wares! And to top the day off we even had an impromptu visit from LA metal band, Eagles of Death Metal who started their Christmas shopping before jetting back off to California...snapshots below!

Plans for next year are underway and we have many exciting developments including entering into the world of 'pop-up shop' and moving into online retailing and representation of the Designers Marketplace vendors and products. News will start to go out throughout the month of January so keep your eyes peeled!

Well we are just about to wrap up another year of Designers Marketplace trading! May there be many more to come. Not forgetting the final market of the year which is this coming Sunday (29th) at Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt which is free entry and starts at 11am until 4pm. We will be sharing the mulled wine and have Christmas jingles to shop to...don't worry, not too many.

Designers Marketplace is going from strength to strength and there are some new and very exciting developments planned for next year.

From the beginning March (hopefully!) 1010 the Designers Marketplace will be launching its online store and portfolio gallery, where you will be able to find and buy from all of your favourite DM traders plus many new names from far and wide!! We will be continuing our work in the promotion of contemporary and innovative works from both emerging and established artists and designers in all of our usual categories:

EVENT DATES FOR NEXT YEAR...
Next years dates are still in the process of being booked. So far we have three confirmed dates and venues, but as soon as we know where our other pit stops will be, we will let you all know. At the moment you can book for July and Dec 2010 dates only.

MARCH & APRIL 2010 - For the months of March and April Designers Marketplace will be changing its format slightly and entering into the world of 'pop-up shop'. We will be moving into (big) empty property space within Middlesbrough town centre, and our work on the promotion and support of regional creative businesses and the retailing of products will continue. Not only will the space be used for retail, but a series of weekly creative events are set to take place inside empty property making it an active, stimulating and exciting hub throughout the whole duration of our stay.

As a market vendor you will still be able to 'rent' your space for various periods of time in a mixed number of ways. The finishing touches are still being made to the proposal and the following details will be getting released early January:

• How to make your space reservation
• Location of empty unit
• What creative events and exciting happenings will be taking place inside the empty unit
• How you can get involved with the project on a number of different levels, learn new skills and also help promote your own creative business through the project.

Has been working within the greetings and lifestyle art industries for over 12 years, supplying and designing for stores such as John Lewis, Liberty, Marks & Spencer, Heals and lifestyle stores. Vicky's independent wedding stationary business is just about to featured in Wedding Magazine as one of the top ten wedding stationers in the UK.

"I am extremely excited about exhibiting at The Designers Market Place in November with a commitment to supporting and attending the events through to 2010 and beyond. I am aiming to use this forum to showcase new designs and products related to the gift and interior market before they are launched on the web site & my (developing) online ‘paper store’".

H O L L Y F L A N A G A N

Graduated this year from Cleveland College of Art and Design, with a background in printed and embroidered textiles. Since graduating Holly has won international awards such as Textprint 09, providing her the opportunity to exhibit and sell designs at the international fashion trade show Indigo in Paris. Holly now works on a freelance basis for the brands Victorias Secrets and Hugo Boss, as well as producing one off pieces for Samantha Shaw in London and fashion designer Avshalom Gur.
Holly's personal brand is a collection of bespoke statement jewellery pieces, one off hand printed scarves and exclusive prints and embroideries. Holly can personalise commisioned pieces creating the perfect colour, fabric and style whether it is an elegant piece for your wedding, or a bold party statement.

"I believe that the highly renowned Designers Marketplace is a great platform to build contacts, buyers and expand, develop and promote my brand".

C L A I R E A B A K E R

Claire A Baker is a local textile designer and maker who works from her studio in Stockton-on-Tees. She exhibits regularly both nationally and internationally. Claire, a member of Designed and Made in Newcastle, recently showcased her most recent product at 'Design Event' at the Baltic in October; a beautiful bag made from vintage French fabrics which incorporates a plethora of accessories including jewellery pieces.
Some of Claire’s work has been selected by the World Crafts Council for the European Prize for Applied Arts and will be included in an exhibition in Mons, Belgium at the end of November 2009. Claire is currently setting up her own label, ‘Line Dry’ which is a nostalgic collection of textile accessories for fashion and the home. At the next Designers Marketplace Claire will be market testing a number of her new products and would welcome comments and opinions of her work.

"I particularly enjoy the Designers Marketplace as it is a hive of activity and an all round social experience, the atmosphere is wonderful and it is an excellent event for meeting other designers together with regular and new clients. It is a world away from the traditional craft fair and shows high quality work from the designers of our region".

R A C H A E L T A Y L O R

Originally from the Wirral, Merseyside, Rachael graduated from the University of Leeds in 2005, with a BA (Hons) in Textile & Fashion Design. Awarded 1st prize in the Janome creative competition 2006, for a layered paper skirt design, Rachael specializes in surface pattern design, developing a signature style of layering & textures. Having designed for one of the UK's leading greetings card brands for two years, Rachael has now started to focus on her own label with clients in the UK & USA. From design studios to private buyers in the art, ceramics, interior, fashion, greetings & marketing industries. Rachael has also recently had her work published in the current design book 'Patterns' by Drusilla Cole. Four pieces of her work have also been selected for the forthcoming 'Print & Pattern' book which will be out in 2010.
