I grew up in Hartlepool and after taking a Foundation course at Cleveland College of Art and Design I moved to Carlisle. I completed a degree in Contemporary Applied Arts at Cumbria Institute of the Arts. During the course I was able to experience printed textiles, embroidered textiles, constructed textiles and ceramics. During my last year I specialised in embroidered textiles, creating images onto felt pieces. After finishing the degree in 2007 I moved to Derbyshire and also took some time out to travel. Although my travels were very inspiring, on returning, I came back to my original theme of bric-a-brac and vintage and began a new series of images. I have gradually developed a collection of my images as transfers onto ceramic jars and canvas bags. I still love felt and embroidery so incorporate some into my collection as decoration for the jars and as accessories. I am returning back to the North East to take part in Designers Marketplace, which will be my first show in the area!

Award winning Art Director John Taylor to sell 'Film The Blanks' poster series at next weeks market!

Film the Blanks was started in 2008 by writer, creative and film fan John Taylor.

After spending the last ten years being all ‘New Media’ – as an award winning art director in London – John has taken a break to pursue his own creative projects closer to home. Put simply, Film the Blanks is a series of classic film posters ... abstracted.

Originally a reaction to film posters that suffer from 'giant face syndrome' as well as a comment on the way modern movies spoon-feed the audience, Film the Blanks removes the clutter to see what still works while forcing the viewer work a little too. What began as a personal online experiment soon evolved into a daily global quiz and then jumped from computer screen to silkscreen as a set of limited edition prints. In its latest incarnation the designs have become QR code enabled postcards which reveal the solutions when scanned with a mobile phone.

Online the project garnered interest and praise from a multitude of sites worldwide, from small personal blogs right up to Total Film and the internet movie-nerd Mecca: IMDb.

Offline the project featured in the French design magazine étapes, The Creative Review Annual 2009, The Guardian and in a strange twist that completes the circle ... multiple signed prints have recently been purchased by Pixar studios.

The playfully interactive nature of the project lends itself to gift purchasing and appeals as much to graphic design geeks as much as it does to fans of blockbusters, b-movies, oscar winners and Michael Winner.

Well ... okay ... maybe their aren't many fans of Michael Winner movies.

Award winning designer VICKY TRAINOR selling her new range at next weeks market... Sat 3rd Dec!

Vicky Trainor is an award winning wedding stationer from Redcar, described as one of the UK's top five 'movers and shakers' in the stationary industry. Vicky has recently launched a brand new hand made collection called The Vintage Drawer. Cuban Pete! Catch him at next weeks Designers Marketplace!

C75 Designs was started by artist Peter Allen (aka Cuban Pete). Pete moved to the North East from the West Midlands, to study, and has since made it his home.

Pete's designs are heavily influenced by graffiti and street culture. Part of that culture has always been to take from the old to give something new and original, a spirit that lends itself well to customising clothing. Now customising is big business and something that C75 Designs specialises in. Whether its hats, jackets, shoes, or accessories, C75 has you covered from head to toe.

Designs range from portraits to patterns to names and slogans in graffiti. Although influenced by the streets, C75 Designs arent just on caps and trainers but also branch out into more sophisticated wear such as ladies heels, mens formal shoes, and suit jackets. Any of the designs on the C75 website (www.c75designs.co.uk) can be recreated on, or adapted to, almost any other item. Also colours can be altered to match other items in the buyers wardrobe in order to complete an outfit or match an accessory.

Cuban Pete has done designs for a range of musicians including local hip hop act Big Rob & BLUNT!, Nottingham emcee Tempa, and is currently working with several Wu-Tang Clan affiliated artists. Also, a pair of his platform heels recently appeared in an article in the French magazine 'Public'.

Pete started out creating items for himself and puts the same care and attention to detail in the work he does for others. When creating custom items Pete works closely with the customer, creating a unique and original piece for the wearer.

Catch 'Jewellery By' at next weeks Christmas market!

Jewellery By, based in Stokesley will be selling a range of beautiful wares at next weeks Christmas market at Middlesbrough Town Hall. Amongst some of the pieces on show will be a new addition to their collection from local designer Jessica Flinn, who's work is "made from stainless steel, vintage lace is sourced from around the world and the patterns are laser etched onto the pieces. Some of the items are available with a gold plated finish".

At next weeks market 'Jewellery By' will also be running a free prize draw for people signing up to their mailing list, offering a chance to win gift vouchers to be spent in store!

Latest member to Designers Marketplace! Meet JESSICA HOGARTH and her fabulous printed patterns!

Jessica Hogarth’s work is primarily focused on illustration and how her quirky prints and patterns can be applied to a variety of products. After graduating with a first class honours degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design in June 2010, Jessica worked as an in-studio designer for a highly commercial interiors company. She has since left to pursue a dream to one day launch her own range of products, and her business ‘Jessica Hogarth Designs’ will officially launch at the British Craft Trade Fair in April next year. Jessica is currently busy developing a collection of products that utilise both digital and hand printed methods. The product range currently includes greetings cards and postcards, ceramic mugs and notebooks.

Jessica loves to travel, and finds new and interesting places to be the greatest influence on her work. Her rural upbringing on the North East Coast has had a clear influence on her coastal collection of designs. Equally, an obvious passion for Paris influenced a lot of the work produced whilst at college; a place Jessica is continuing to gain inspiration from for freelance work.

This Saturdays market couldn't have come round fast enough! We're very excited to be back in Middlesbrough and we are bringing along some fabulous new designers who have never sold at the Middlesbrough market before. One being Louise Adams with her very fun and sexy accessories brand Love Lou La Belle!

Louise is relatively new to retailing her wares amd began trading in March this year. Louise tells us:

"I have a boring office day job but this is where my passion really lies and I'm trying so hard to make a go of it. I feel I have come a long way in such a short space of time gaining over 1000 fans on facebook. I enjoy scouring the internet and sourcing my materials from all over the world, America to Japan. I sell an ecclectic mix of weird and wonderful jewellery, lovingly made and at affordable prices. My main influences include anything cute and kawaii, I love Harajuku girls style and also 50's pin ups & rockabilly".

Interview with CHARLES TWIST PHOTOGRAPHY

This weeks market will be showcasing a whole new fresh bunch of artists and designers in Newcastle as well as some of our old time favourites. One being Charles Twist Photography, showing off his camera skills and selling his beautiful nature and landscape prints. We catch up with Charles with an insighful and inspiring interview into his world!

How would you describe your style?
A balancing act between presentation and representation. I look for fascinating subjects but I also seek to catch the eye with bold colours and forms. It’s not just a question of recreating what exists in the big, wide world. I must add to it to create something new and fascinating in its own right.

A balancing act between the different elements of the picture. I try to make the composition as clear as possible. When looking for a picture, I deliberately look for what attracts me in an almost naïve fashion. Then the technician in me takes over and pares the view down to the essentials, creates links between different parts of the composition.

Do you have a favourite subject?
Favourites come and go. If you look at my printed work, you’ll see a lot of local landscapes in glorious colour. They’re typically more than a year old. The colour and the variety of Nature really turned me on. Although I am still drawn to these scenes, I am less bewitched because I have grown out of that phase of exploration. I’ll no doubt come back to it with fresh ideas, a fresh take. I think it’s important not to be bored or jaded, as that really comes through in a picture.

In the last year, I have worked a lot more in towns and cities, exploring architecture: its forms and colours, its meaning to the residents and visitors. That is my current favourite.

Do you take photographs in pleasure time and how are those shots different to your more commercial work?
There I was thinking I was meant to suffer for my art. ;-) Photographers commonly complain about the lack of time to develop their personal work and I am no different. At best, I manage an outing or two every month. It’s important to be experimental as it provides new insights and/or new methods. At the moment, I am spending a lot of time ‘playing’ with Victorian lenses.

I am not sure that my prints and cards of local scenes are truly ‘commercial’. When I take pictures for a commission, I must pander to my client’s tastes. With my prints however, I take pictures because something about the view has caught my eye. I have a lot of say in the end result. I think the main constraint imposed by commerce is in the choice of subjects, since pictures of icons (Roseberry Topping, Tyne Bridge) sell better. My more personal work is less concerned with how recognisable the location is and more concerned with aesthetics and philosophy, with the vocabulary and grammar of the method and the subject.

If your work could be featured in any magazine or publication which one would it be and why?
I would love for my work to gain broader recognition, to be recognised by my peers. It would be nice to get my work in to one of the more arty magazines. For that though, I would need to spend more time producing the right kind of work. I think I need a patron.

How long have you been running your business for? Has it been hard getting into self employment as a freelance photographer?
My photography business has been running for over two years now. At the outset, I chose to sell prints and cards because I had an extensive collection of pictures from the Teesside/ Cleveland area. So it was actually quite easy to get started. The main difficulty was cash-flow, as this type of business has a high turnover and low margins. There is a lot of investment to get the prints and cards in to the market.

The other aspect of the business is commissioned work. I take pictures of events, of people at work & play, of buildings (interiors and exteriors), of products. This relies heavily on having contacts and building a reputation, which is a slow and at times disheartening process. Once the initial inertia is overcome, it’s personally very rewarding though.

How do you go about getting your name out there for work?
There isn’t a silver bullet. It’s a matter of continuously pushing my work in to the public arena, by finding new galleries and taking part in markets. There is a lot of cold-calling and –stepping. Quality matters obviously, as does reliability. It’s good to be known for a type of work and a style. Press releases and online media help to create a buzz but selling is mainly about meeting people.

What do you like most about your job?
The variety. It is tremendous: this week, I am advertising the upcoming Festival of Victorian Photography which I am organising as part of Saltburn’s 150th birthday celebrations, I am answering interviews (including this one!), today I am shooting the interior of a bed & breakfast and tomorrow some jewellery for a local artist. Oh and I am developing my business contacts for my photography of science and technology.

Do you have any favourite photographers, anyone who continually inspires your work?
Not really. It’s more individual pictures or styles which I find interesting. They challenge me and force me out of my comfort zone. It’s also a way of learning: how did he do that? Having said that, there are photographers who continually produce interesting work, like Jon Brock and Richard Childs in the realm of landscape photography. I don’t think they inform my work so much as feed my passion for photography.

Do you have any words of advice for budding fellow photographers?
Fundamentally, it’s a matter of listening to the client – whether that’s a third party or yourself.

For personal work, never lose your inner voice, your childish fascination with the world. Listening to others is good for hints and tips, but pointless for direction: that has to come from within.

For commercial work, don’t give up. If it isn’t selling, ask yourself why not. It may be you’re not selling the right product to the right public or at the right price. Don’t be afraid to alter one of those and keep on trying until you find a niche.

One new recruit, Yvette Hawkins, will be showcasing her fabulously crafted sculptures and ornaments from second hand books. These books exist as large scale installations for galleries and public art projects and also get sold as one off pieces to art lovers on etsy and folksy.

We catch up with Yvette to find out more about her work...

How long have you been an artist for? What got you into your craft?
I have always always wanted to be an artist. It was the thing I decided to do when I was about 5 and started to draw. I was completely obssessed with my brother's crayola tower, filled with felt tip pens, crayons and paints. I was never allowed to touch it, then I managed to get hold of my dad's biro's and pretty much drew on everything I could lay my hands on.

Why have you made the choice to work with paper and books?
The thing i love about paper, is the idea that something so fragile and one dimensional can become structured and sturdy just by folding it. I actually started folding books because I wanted to manipulate the way printed words can be seen, so although i have always loved to work with paper, it was mark making and print that drew me to books.

Where do you get your ideas and inspiration from?
I'm not sure. I guess they come from a variety of sources. I like to use minimal colour palettes with my installation and I am drawn to structures and forms in architecture, grids, maps and molecules and also the geometric forms found in nature, like cobwebs. I'm also inspired by repetition and the sort of work I tend to really appreciate have an awe sort of quality where I think 'how did they do that' or find a way to completely immerse the audience. Conrad Shawcross's sculptures in particular come to mind, where I really appeciate the scale and engineering aspects of creating work.

Is there something special about the books you use in your work? Do you ever come across a book you feel you shouldn't be folding and keeping for good?!
The books I use are forgotten or lost, often charity shop finds or ones Libraries can't sell off. They are also donated by people all over the country or come from second hand book shops. I like to think I am perhaps reinvigorating their lives. I would feel guilty about dismantling a treasured book (I have a bookcase full of 'not for folding' books). But the books I use don't have a special relationship with me, so I think that is okay. I stop thinking of them as books, but as objects or as my material, like clay might be to a sculptor.

Do you have any upcoming shows or projects?
I'm taking part in Craft Month at The Biscuit Factory in May. The show is called from Wood to Paper and opens on 5th May. I'm very excited about it. I'll also be making some modular origami sculptures that anyone can drop in on and make with me on 21st May 12-2pm

Any new products for your Etsy shop in the works?
I'm focusing on developing book sculptures with other languages as well as map books and graphic novels. I'm also hoping to offer my larger installations to interior design companies or as a service for people to buy for their homes. I'm also refining my book binding skills so that I can make limited edition artist books, oh and some paper cuts too. I have so many things I want to do and develop, it's hard to find the time to do everything.

This week we have a quick catch up with first time vendor of DM, freelance illustrator Lucy Farfort, to give us a brief rundown on what we can expect to fnd her selling at this months market.

"I’m based in Newcastle Upon Tyne and work as a freelance lllustrator offering my services for logo design, web graphics, poster design and more. I’ve had a variety of clients from the Wellcome Trust to Monster Ceilidh Band. I also sell prints of my illustrations and offer a range of handmade goods.

My illustrative style is bold, colourful and quirky and my images begin as free hand pencil drawings which are then scanned into a Mac where colour, texture and pattern are added. I love fabrics especially vintage fabrics which feature heavily in my art. In terms of the handmade pieces I create, these are mainly textile products such as cases and pouches which are embellished with my illustrations adapted as applique designs.

Designers Marketplace had an amazing launch back in February in Newcastle! (just catching up on posts now - how rude) It was a great way to start our bi-monthly residency and partnership with The Biscuit Factory in their new event space, The Holy Biscuit.

We had some really fantastic design talent on show, high visitor numbers, amazing customer feedback and many happy stall holders! It couldn't have been a better day. Cath Ball: "Yes, stitched ceramics! I combine both ceramics and textiles within my work. After studying an applied arts course in Carlisle (where I am still based) I continued to develop my work and set out as a designer maker. I now work from my studio at home in a small village just six miles west of Carlisle. I use a variety of techniques such as wheel thrown pottery, slip casting and hand building which are all inspired in some way from textiles, whether it is the texture of lace or stitching into the surface of the clay".

You could say I’m challenging the conventional use of clay ‘‘can you really stitch into clay?’’

"I always enjoy taking part in designer fairs and I feel it’s important to see what other people are producing as well as taking an interest and supporting other designer makers. At Designers Marketplace it’s always a great opportunity for me to also find lots of lovely gifts for family and friends, I never come away empty handed".

Four featured vendors from this months market!

This month will see Designers Marketplace's first real bi-monthly market at The Holy Biscuit in Newcastle. Our small launch event back in December was a success despite the horrific weather conditions keeping most huddled inside! Many of our vendors making trade contacts now stocking independant galleries and shops in Newcastle. This post briefly features four vendors you can expect to see in two weeks time. Lucy Adlington from THE PARLOR BOUTIQUE:
"The Parlor Boutique is an online jewellery emporium filled with lovingly hand crafted pieces, where I aimto use only the finest quality findings and create wonderful jewellery for you to wear. I have a passion for the decadent and theatrical which is channeled into the creation of stunning, durable costume jewellery. The Parlor came to be after I became disillusioned with the high street and its mass produced designs so I set out to create an alternative for myself to wear. I am incredibly passionate about the extensive testing that goes into my jewellery, so that it will not only last the test of time but will also give the wearer a piece of history. I use many unique vintage findings I have sourced and then re-create into modern pieces with a historical twist".

Stephen Gibbs and Chris Barter from BOREAL:

Boreal collaborates with an elite international selection of artists and designers to produce limited edition bespoke wallets. Boreal is made up of Stephen Gibbs a Multi-Media Artist and Chris Barter a Graphic Designer, working in partnership with artists and designers to promote Art through apparel and a diverse exhibition programme.

The concept for Boreal has grown organically and has been an evolving process. “Whilst studying art at university I (Stephen) found myself frustrated with the lack of variety in the fashion industry for men and in particular the lack of imagination and ingenuity. Finding myself discouraged with the lack of options for output art, I was always on the lookout for something a little bit different that was unique. It was from this lack and gap in the market that the inspiration for Boreal came about”.

Helen Stevens from SURFACE//PHILIA:

Helen graduated in 2002 with a first class BA(Hons) in Textiles and Surface Design. After five years of designing and producing women's leather accessories, Surface//Philia is now concentrating on abstract prints, patterns and illustrations for surfaces within interiors and home wares. "Always having an interest in innovative surface application within print and pattern, moving into interiors will allow me to go back to experimentation with less commercial constraints". Surface//Philia has recently launched three successful ceramic collections consisting of hand applied illustration onto white bone china. Over the next few months we’ll be seeing the launch of bespoke wallpaper ranges, co-coordinating interiors products and one off textile interior hangings.

Charles Twist from CTNP Photography:
"I've been practicing photography in one form or another for over 10 years now. It's been a way for me to document the places I travel to. I find myself equally comfortable in cities as I do in the country, hence the accumulation of pictures from both. I am naturally curious, which has drawn me to examine both in some detail. I thus acquired a basic knowledge of architecture while developing a career as a scientist. Now, as a photographer, I get to bring together and enjoy all these facets.

CTNP photography sprang from the desire to commercialise my work. As well as continuing my own explorations in order to produce photographs for stock and for retail (eg prints), I now listen to the demands of the market too by writing articles and accepting commissions. Of particular note is my considerable experience of large format view cameras in order to produce carefully crafted photographs of the built and the natural environments".

GUEST BLOGGER : KIM TILLYER : WITCH MOUNTAIN

Long time follower but first time seller Kim Tillyer, will be showcasing her exquisite textile designs at our Christmas market in two weeks! Witchmountain explores various stages of textile design from visual studies through to final selling products such as womens and childrens clothing and accessories to card, gift and stationary. We catch up with Kim to find out more about Witchmountain.

Witchmountain is a mythical land in the middle of the North York Moors. Here, Kim lives and works in a cluttered kitchen with an endless supply of coffee,a temperamental wood burning stove, two teenage children and a ragged assortment of animals.

After graduating from Cleveland College of Art and Design in 2008,with a first in Textiles and Surface Design, Kim worked as a freelance designer selling printed and embroidered designs for childrenswear in both America and Japan. "Producing up to 6 hand embroidered garment shapes a week was a steep learning curve after college and I found it hard to follow the very commercial trends that my agent demanded.No matter how hard I tried my work was always a little quirky and off center!"

After some success selling framed work including the "Snow Bear" (which is now available as a greetings card from her Etsy shop) friends and relations gave this good advice "Do what you love because that really shows in the end result" .Drawings and textile pieces have been exhibited at various galleries in the North East and are currently at the Zillah Bell Gallery in Thirsk . Favorite imagery includes birds, foliage and her trademark bears which symbolize inner strength, safe travel and introspection. "I have a huge emotional and sentimental attachment to some of the work I produced in college and in the past year, which wasn't an easy one. I think the work tells a story and even if no one else knows that story it gives the pieces a bit of soul...if that doesn't sound too cheesy"

Recently, in preparation for the Designer's Marketplace and other events , Kim has been making a range of accessories, printed and embroidered clothing and some very very cute baby slippers. Each piece is printed and embroidered by hand and is therefore unique,individual and a total antidote to the highstreet and the tyranny of trends.

Despite a terrible snails pace broadband connection, Kim has been writing her blog ,Witchmountain, for almost three years now and finds it has helped her make and maintain connections with other creative people whilst living what can often seem a very remote and isolated existence. "I'm really looking forward to my first time as a seller at a Designer's Marketplace event. It'll also be a great chance to catch up with some old friends I haven't seen since college and some new ones I have only met online."

Designers Marketplace is happy to announce the exciting new opportunity of expanding our markets into Newcastle and moving into partnership with The Biscuit Factory. After the growing success and demand of our Middlesbrough based markets, we have been offered the opportunity of holding our markets on a bi-monthly basis in The Biscuit Factory’s new venue ‘The Holy Biscuit’.

As well as continuing to hold markets independently in Middlesbrough, The Holy Biscuit offers Designers Marketplace the chance of becoming a more regular event and reaching a wider audience for its members. The bi-monthly markets have been offered exclusivity to The Holy Biscuit, and will be held on a smaller scale in line with the size of venue. Interview 5: Michael Gamble Photography

This week we caught up with one of our all time favourite local photographers...(now international I guess seeming how he has ran off to Canada for a while!)...Michael Gamble. Enjoy!

How would you describe your style?

I enjoy producing striking images and have been regularly commented on the way I capture colour.

Do you have a favourite subject?

I've spent a lot of time shooting landscape, live music, event and portrait photography but am looking to progress into sports. I'm keen to incorporate my learnings into this and see what results I can come up with.

Do you go out taking photographs for pleasure and how are those shots different to your more commercial work?

I love to be out using a camera. If I end up being paid, then that's just a bonus. I don't believe in doing things if you don't enjoy them.

If your work could be featured in any magazine which one would it be and why?

I'd love to become part of The National Geographic Magazine. I'm a great lover of the outside world and to be able to study, document and display this would be a dream come true.

How long have you been running your business for? Has it been hard getting into self employment as a freelance photographer?

I've been running for around 2 years, but only in the last 6 months have things really picked up and my work had me noticed.

How do you get your name out there for work?

Work my ass off, but I'm still not satisfied. I need to work harder!

What has been your most exciting project since setting up your business? I've done a few reports for Red Bull, covering their X-Fighters Jam in Newcastle and travelling to Dublin to document their Illume competition.

What do you like most about your job? I imagine you get to be involved with lots of exciting events?

I enjoy the randomness of it. You never know what will happen at a shoot and the people I've met are amazing.

I love the work of Ricky Adam. He's so raw and honest with his work. I really like that.

Where can you see your business 5 years from now?

As long as I'm enjoying myself and working with a camera, I don't mind. Hopefully crawling around the undergrowth capturing some incredible shots.

Do you have any words of advise for budding fellow photographers?

Just go for it. Be yourself and do it because you want to, not just because it's 'cool'.

Interview 4: Milk Milk Lemonade

Designers Marketplace has fallen slightly behind on its interviews as we've been busy running around our capital at London Design Festival. Having spent three days at various shows, exhibitions and events, we feel the need to say northern design talent has just as much to offer as our southern comrades. Having returned and reflected upon our trip down, Designers Marketplace feels even stronger about its support towards northern based up and coming artists and designers. Anyway, back to last weeks interview with one of our newest recruits, surface designer Ella Kirk with her homeware brand Milk Milk Lemonade.

So Ella, tell us what is your background and training is in…

I’ve always been a scribbler. I loved art and mainly illustration throughout school and college. I graduated with a First in Surface Pattern Design last year from Leeds Collage of Art and Design where I learnt how to transfer my doodles onto various materials, including ceramics, fabrics and papers via various printing methods (screen, heat transfer, digital, mono…).

And why have you decided to become self employed?
After University I found the design job pool to be pretty shallow but have remained eager to produce and sell my designs for homeware, giftware and fashion textiles. I decided to try and get my stuff out there independently showing at various galleries and selling through etsy and Designer’s Marketplace.

Describe your brand 'Milk Milk Lemonade', what does it represent and mean to you?
‘Milk Milk Lemonade…’ is a naughty saying my Mum taught me when I was little. My illustration and colour palette have always been quite childlike, I use toys and memories as inspiration but try to add a more ‘grown up’ twist with typography and composition.

What exciting things are you working on at the moment?...
At the moment I’m working on a new line of cotton scarves. My fashion scarves have until now been digitally printed on silk and I wanted to make my designs more available to a younger audience with a lower price point. I’ve also started selling ipod and laptop skins from website Society6.

What processes do you go through to get to that final design?
Doodling is still my first port of call, I’ll doodle whatever I find curious and then scan it in to Photoshop and fiddle around with colours, mirroring, repetition etc. I then tend to send my designs off to various printers to get a proper shiny professional finish on mugs, fabrics and greetings cards etc.

What are your plans for 'Milk Milk Lemonade', how big are you hoping the brand will become?
HUGE… well, that would be lovely but so far ‘Milk Milk Lemonade’ is making a name for itself in Manchester and hopefully now I have moved to Middlesbrough, it will be as successful here. My online shop has also helped me with success across the country and hopefully that will continue to grow.

What methods do you use to market your business?
I’ve currently got a few exhibitions in the Manchester area, one at Manchester Gallery of Costume and one at The Royal Exchange Theatre. I also use Faebook, online store Etsy, online portfolio site Society6, my website. I also write to blogs like Print & Pattern to see if they may be interested in featuring ‘Milk Milk Lemonade’… if you don’t ask you don’t get!

Where do you go for your inspiration?
Museums and zoos, toy shops, charity shops… anywhere I can observe or photograph things you don’t see everyday. On the other hand I like to collect everyday objects to draw, I like to make the familiar alien to me again- like seeing it for the first time, I think that’s the childlike thing coming in again there. I like discovery.

What do you feel are the most important skills for a designer to have and/or develop?
Curiosity. I think if you want to make something out of an object or theme, you have to be curious about it and what you can squeeze out of it. I think drawing, painting etc are useful and I’d be lost without them but experimentation and a sense of your own design style, I think, produce the most appealing design.

What has been the biggest achievement in your design career since leaving university?
I think my exhibition at ‘Manchester Gallery of Costume’ (ongoing) and the sale of my greetings cards from ‘Manchester City Art Gallery’ are my main achievements. Having your work sold legitimately and knowing that it has such a wide audience gives me a lovely, warm, fuzzy, validated feeling.

What is your advice for new graduates or students hoping to set up their own business in design?
Don’t be afraid to be a wee bit pushy. Try and get your name anywhere and everywhere, get a website, promote on Facebook, Twitter wherever you can, don’t expect miracles but use every opportunity, don’t be afraid to invest in yourself and keep talking to other designers for tip offs about printers, exhibitions, blogs…everything!

Week 3 Interview: What Katy Did Next

Designers Marketplace has had a busy busy past week running between the exciting cities of Amsterdam and London hunting out some design related brain food. This is the first chance we've had to upload our interview from last week with designer maker Katy Howieson, owner of the fresh new brand What Katy Did Next...

So Katy, what is your background and training in?

Studying Design Technology and Textiles for GCSE and A Levels was a real turning point for me. I had always been artistic and creative but the lessons made me realise that this was where my strengths were and it was an added bonus that it was something I enjoyed doing. For my Degree I decided Textiles and Surface Design was the perfect choice for me. I had already gained my making ability from d.t. and wanted to develop my skills in surface decoration. Throughout the course I managed to attain my own style of working as well as my awareness of the design industry.

And having just recently graduated what made you decide to set up your own business and move into designer maker products?
Even though my degree course was about surface design and decoration I have always loved making gifts for people or customising my own outfits. My second year at university really opened up my eyes and I found a media I was comfortable with and developed my own style of working – Embroidery! I started making a few accessories for myself such as hair bands and necklaces which caught a lot of attention. A friend suggested making some up to sell and after hearing about the Designers Marketplace through Helen Stevens (my tutor at the time) I decided this was something I wanted to be part of. Since having my first stall last Christmas my confidence has grown immensely and I have been working hard on getting my own business up and running since then.

Describe your brand 'What Katy Did Next', what does it represent and mean to you?
The name for the brand ‘What Katy did Next’ comes from a series of books I read as a child. In my early teens I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer and that this would be the name of my label. Even though the fashion designer dream has altered the name has stuck. The brand represents accessories for people who want something that not everybody has, something that is different enough for them to make a statement and although some of my work does follow fashion trends it also carries enough of my own taste and style for it to stand out from the crowd. I feel especially proud when I’m complimented on my bespoke one off designs and custom made pieces.

I think its the compliments which make it all worth while in the end, there is nothing more fulfilling. Do you feel the interaction with potential customers at Designers Marketplace helps to direct your products? Who would you say your target market is?
Absolutely! At last years market my embroidered products were limited to hairbands and a couple of necklaces, a couple of members of the public mentioned how they loved the idea of the product but felt hairbands were a bit to young for them. One woman suggested making brooches and then comissioned a few from me there. Initially my target market was for young females, but after doing the designers market and meeting an array of new customers I have widened my scope to an older audience. My accessories cater for all ages of women with a taste for something quirky and classy with a vintage feel.

What are you working on at the moment?
My work is currently being stocked in Changing Rooms in Middlesbrough and Sunkissed in Sedgefield, so as well as providing stock for them and taking on orders for custom pieces I am getting prepared for my stall at the November Designers Marketplace and working on new products for Christmas time. I am also currently working on a collection of bridal headwear and accessories ready for next Spring which I am really excited about.

What techniques do you favour and use?
The techniques I use mainly focus around embroidery and embellishment. I love working with Vintage items such as fabrics, lace, beads and even old brooches and jewellery. A technique I picked up recently for my last project of my degree is cutwork using leather. I intend on exploring this further for creating something really amazing and unusual for my bridal collection.

What are your plans for 'What Katy Did Next', how big is the brand going to become?
I’m taking each day as it comes with the brand. The accessories line has been well received and is extremely popular around Christmas time for gifts. The wedding industry is something I would love to conquer with my headwear, I feel many British brides are restricted in the choice they have for wedding accessories and I would love to offer them something different from the norm. Once my pieces are made up and ready I plan on hiring a professional photographer to capture some glorious images of my work and help me turn that into a look book which I will send off to companies, magazines and blogs. Ideally I would love for my bridal collection to take off and then continue with my original designs as a side business but we will have to see what comes from it.

Who and what inspires your work? Where do you go for inspiration?
My inspiration comes mainly from my love of everything Vintage, beautiful gentle colour palettes with aged lace and pearls and gorgeous florals. Although my work is fashion based I get a lot of inspiration from the likes of interior stylists Emily Chalmers and Sibella Court but I do contrast my love for them with high fashion designers such as Elie Saab and Valentino.

Blogs are my addiction and I am easily distracted by sites such as Dear Golden Vintage, Lobster and Swan and Claire A Baker’s blog. I also make a lot of amazing discoveries through having my online shop through Etsy.com and have found amazing designers such as Myra from Twigs and Honey and Emily from Which Goose.

What do you feel are the most important skills for a designer to have and/or develop?
As well as having the skills to make products or design work you need to be able to communicate and be confident in promoting yourself. I shamelessly plug my work online and in public and it is necessary for small businesses to build a name for themselves and get recognised unfortunately you cannot rely on luck.

What has been the biggest achievement in your design career since leaving university?
Having not one but two shops offer to stock my products in the first two months after graduating is probably the biggest achievement in my design career since leaving CCAD. I am also thrilled to get the chance to design and make bridesmaids headwear for a bride to be in Belfast.

What is your advice for new graduates or students hoping to set up their own business in design?
Again it would be not to be afraid to shamelessly promote yourself and do not be discouraged by a slow start. Also a major lesson I have learned is that you can’t please everyone, being able to alter your products or designs to cater to a client’s taste comes in extremely handy in my line of work.

Week 2 Interview: The Olde Young Teahouse

This week we have been talking to one of our newest yet completely dedicated followers of Designers Marketplace, Carli Mc.Naught with her exciting and brave new buisness venture into the world of tea.

DM: So how long have you been running your business?
C: I have been running The Olde Young Tea House for coming up 3 months now. Although the idea was born 9 months ago.

DM: What was it that gave you the idea of opening your own tearoom?
C: I worked in London for a while and had odd days off which were not on a weekend so I spent a lot of time on my own sitting in tea rooms and little cafes. I thought why not bring something like this back to Middlesbrough.

DM:So after graduating in fashion design from CCAD, you moved to London, who were you working for?
C: I was working for Chester Barrie Savile Row. A tailors that has been on Savile Row since the 60's.

DM: Was it always your dream to be working in this role?
C: My dream is to work in a visual merchandising or buying role, I moved to London gain experience. I am now working in a role where I can buy, merchandise, visual merchandise, manage and have total control which is even better.

DM: You must have been very passionate and confident about starting your own business in an unknown line of business. What advice would you give someone wanting to set up business?
C: I am very proud to be from the North East, growing up with the beach and countryside. You do not realize how lucky you are until you are not there anymore. I have always had a strong awareness of the social scene and what people want around here. I know that Middlesbrough is quite behind on new things that catch on around the rest of the country. But with the network of people working together in all different industries such as creative and business, we can all build up a good reputation.
The advise I would give to somebody is to just go for it. Don't mull things over if you have an idea and you are very passionate about it. There is help out there. Contact the Council and Business link and find your niche. You are more likely to get funding and support if you have an individual idea.
Networking and promotion is KEY...newspapers, magazines, flyers, posters, it all helps to promote your business.

DM: What do you feel the important factor in your business is?
C: The most important factor is determination! If you believe in yourself you can do it.

DM: And how do you put this into practise?
C: I put this into practice by planning head and planning my goals i then am able to cross them off my list when they have been done.

DM: What has been the biggest achievement in your career so far?
C: My biggest achievement in my career is opening up my own shop. To own and trade from a premises is great, I get to meet new people every day.

DM: Having just moved back to the North from living in London, how do you feel about opportunities in the region for new businesses and creative ideas?
C: I feel that the opportunities are endless here. To be quoted the worst place to live in England I feel there is nowhere lower for us to go, so all we can do is all work together to push ourselves back up. With all the creative new businesses starting to establish themselves working together is a must, we can all help each other and work as a unit to build even more opportunities.

DM: So what is the next big move for you and your business?
C: The next move is to publish our website which is all taking place as we speak. Again working with other businesses there is only more funding to given.

DM: Just to finish off!...what is your most popular sell out tea?
C: Our most popular tea is the famous Earl Grey with Blue Flower. It’s perfect for people who dare to try something a little different from 'Normal' tea. It’s the bridge to a whole new world of tea's!

...and not forgetting the important bit, cake?
I could not have the most popular cake as all out cakes sell out in a matter of hours. Some of my favourites are the Oreo Cake, Cherry Cake and Lemon and Poppyseed.

We are situated at 84 Grange Road Middlesbrough, opposite the entrance to the Mall. And we will also be exhibiting at Designers Marketplace in November at the town hall.

DM Artist & Designer Interviews

Designers Marketplace is on the down low for the next few months until our next market on Sunday 28th November at Middlesbrough Town Hall. So, we've decided to use this time to get to know all of our artists and designers a little better by running a series of short interviews. This will hopefully give insight into not just what they produce but what makes them so involved with their subject, what makes them tick, and any useful hints and tips for budding new business start ups within the creative industries.

This week we have been chatting to Lucy Leaver who is a trained textile designer living in Saltburn. Lucy produces her own one off bespoke shopper bags aswell as helping manage a fabulous retro shop in Saltburn.

DM: So having been trained in Textiles and Surface Design, what got you into bag design and making?
L: Two things! Firstly I was kindly given two huge bags of amazing vintage fabrics featuring retro prints from an elderly lady who was once a seamstress, but simply couldn’t continue making clothes any more. Secondly, at my previous flat in Richmond, London there was a leather interiors shop just down the road that was closing down, I popped in to soak up some bargains. I spotted a clear bin bag full of bright coloured leather off cuts for a £10 - a textile designer’s paradise! Unfortunately they only accepted cash, on my return to the shop to my utter dismay, the bag had been sold. Another bag of neutral coloured leather off cuts was presented to me which I bought for ten fine pounds. When I got it home I discovered thirty pairs of beautiful cream lined leather bag straps. Hey presto! I now had the fabric and the straps destined to become ‘Lucy Leaver Shopper Bags’!

Helen Stevens (who is a source of my creative inspiration!) (p.s. DM didnt make her say that!) was soon to be putting on her first Designers Marketplace, this gave me the incentive to hold a stall and become a part of the creative community Helen was building. I designed and stitched away for four weeks at home in London, then travelled up to Middlesbrough by train the day before the market, I was actually interviewed whilst on the train by Radio Tees about the event I was about to have a stall at. Throughout the day all twenty-four of my bags were sold for £22 each. It was like turning fabric into cash! Such a positive and exciting experience which has kept me going ever since.

DM: With such an awareness for design, how would you describe your style of work?
L: Quirky, eclectic, patterned to the max, conversational – each design tells a story, unique and retro.

DM: What do you feel the important factor in your work is?
L: The designs and sketches that I create by hand and manipulate with CAD are an integral part of my work, these sketches are what set my designs apart from other designers. They are my signature print.

DM: Where do you go to source your inspiration? Favourite haunts? Certain publications?
L: Vintage shops, charity shop books can sometimes dictate a theme or background to my designs, I love the unpredictable nature of this way of sourcing new inspiration. Favourite fabulous finds have included; ‘Paris Mon Amour’, ‘Jean-Claude Gautrand’, ‘Sirens’, by Chris Achelleos’ and ‘Drawing Architecture’, ‘Paul Hograth’. I love photography, many of my snaps have also featured as backgrounds, from bullring stadiums in Spain to the graffiti back streets of Barcelona. I pour over back copies of fashion magazines such as Elle and Vogue and also take colour and pattern inspiration from Home interior magazines such as Elle Decoration.

DM: With all that in mind, what do you feel are the most important skills for a designer to have and/or develop?
L: Your own sense of direction. Developing a technique and way of working that works for you as an individual. Keeping an eye on trends and being globally aware of the art movement and what is happening around us.

DM: What has been the biggest achievement in your design career so far?
L: When I graduated from Cleveland College of Art and Design, I exhibited at the exciting show New Designers in London, which is an event showcasing all graduating creative courses from all over the UK. Whilst on the stand, I was approached by Trisha Guild owner of Designers Guild the famous textile furnishing brand. She was interested in my work and I gained a paid placement at the head office studio in London.

DM: Having newly moved back to the North from living eight years in London, how do you feel about opportunities in the region for creative people?
L: I think you have to make opportunities for yourself here. I see this as a challenge - find a niche, do your research and be proactive. It has motivated me to set up my own business making customised transfer bags in schools with travelling art workshops. I’m proud that I made this happen. It is something that I would never have done in London. Business advice I found is much more accessible in my northern region than it was in London. On the whole, moving away from London has been an incredibly positive experience that has enhanced my career goals.

DM: That is such a positive thing to hear, probably something a lot of people would relate to. So now you’re all settled back in good old Saltburn, what is the next move within design for Lucy Leaver?
L: I am currently making ‘Ickle Shopper Bags ’ for children. Seeing the children in the schools I have worked in being inspired by my designs, gave me the idea to make bags that they could use! I have enrolled myself onto photography and pottery courses, I believe in keeping your design field fresh and broad by practising other disciplines. I also work for Northern Lights Interiors based in Saltburn, where I am also selling my bags. Its great to see my products being mixed with such a jaw dropping emporium of vintage collectables. I am getting involved in the buying for this shop, which is very exciting, I also get to make my bags whilst at work in the shop.

Pit stop at World In The Square!

Designers Marketplace was offered the oppourtunity to have space at Middlesbrough's World In The Square this past weekend over a two day free boutique festival to coincide with the Tall Ship Race in Hartlepool. The mini festival was a celebration of music and dance from around the world.

Other highlights included:

World class music and dance ensembles from Russia, Taiwan, Isreal & Croatia (in association with Billingham Intl Folklore Festival).
Brian Finnegan (Maverick flute and tin whistle player).
Gris Sanderson and The Harpophonics (UK/Ghana)
Sheelanagig (Providing a lively blend of gypsy jazz, North African and Celtic folk music)
Auvo Quartet (UK/Finland. Enthralling young band, blending traditional music from their respective Scandinavian and UK homes)
Phil Alexander Duo (European cafe culture in the form of French waltzers and Balkan tunes)
Flamenco (UK/Spain. Beautiful dancing and the sound of Spain brought to you by the regions finest exponents)
Rhythm Train (Brazilian Carnival with a strong Samba beat)
HoopLa-la, Zumba and Mandala street art.

Designers Marketplace had a very fun two days and even though we had typical summer torrential rainfall the sales still came in!

You will also be able to have a sneaky tea tasting session from Middlesbrough’s newly opened tearoom The Olde Young Teahouse who supply over 60 luscious flavours, there will be a slice of homemade cake tried as well.

National cult magazine Nude will be in attendance selling copies off for as little as a £2.50 so get down early!

And local guerilla press companies Aloha 'Ino Press & Sozboz will be selling their exotic ranges of quirky books, comics, zines and art. All lovingly created, photocopied and stapled by artists and writers including James Harris, Gus Hughes, AJ Garrett and Alyson Agar. Founder Helen Stevens formed the organisation to help build on the idea of an open support network and creative hub for regional artists and designers, independent of gallery and studio based groups and memberships.

Designers Marketplace Pop-Up Shop is bidding farewell to its stay in the Albert Road unit after 6 weeks of representing and flogging glorious wares from artist and designers around the region. To celebrate the occasion we have decided to have a bit of a do and go out with a bang!

For one night and one day only we are teaming up with an exciting bunch of creative geniuses for one massive art workshop.

THE WEDNESDAY PROJECT, CHICKADEE, THE CLOUD COMMISSION, MALARKY, MR.OWL, AUDREY NEWHOUSE, NIALL GRIEVES, TUBBYPHUNK and a bunch of others will be collaborating on a mass scale, getting their creative juices flowing and offering the chance for you to get invloved!

Large scale drawing and painting galore!...with a little bit of badge making on the side (would be rude not too). We'll also have wine, tea, coffee, maybe a biscuit or two and some tasteful tunes.

We just require a smile at the door, a drawing tool in your hand and for you to leave your mark in our visitors book! All work produced may be developed into some sort of young hip publication so we'll keep you posted!

This month we will be seeing the arrival of Middlesbrough's first ever fashion week. Launching on Thursday 29th April for one week there will various events, shows and special shopping offers taking place all over the town centre.

Designers Marketplace has been offered the chance to take centre stage with an open air market in the town centre itself on Saturday 1st May from 9.30am onwards. The full timetable of events will be heavily advertised across regional publications and media and we'll be expecting a high volume of visitors.

Designers Marketplace will be presenting 12 stalls selling one off designer maker products such as fashion, accessories, ceramics, lifestyle gifts and photography.

Designers Marketplace Pop-Up Shop has now been open for two weeks and is proving to be just a wee bit of a success for the yokils and all that have been involved thus far! An exhibition of new works by emerging artist James Adair.The artist’s current work can be described as a visual splendor, loosely derived from flora and fauna. His vibrant and bold use of colour and patterns create work that is as much playful and free as it is organized and rhythmic. James has been our artist in residence here at pop up shop from Thurs 4th March and will be finishing this Saturday 22nd March with an art sale of his work which includes the series of new pieces. Painting directly on to original 60s/70s floral wallpaper and a series of beautifully painted canvases are just some of the works that will be on show.

AJ GARRETT'S BAD ART REVOLUTION: The Bad Art Academy

An interactive exhibition for all from Operation: Bad Art - an ongoing project with the target of perishing all neurotic concepts associated with drawing. Drawings from Operation Bad Art workshops will be on show. Using only marker pens, white paper and cheap crayons under conditions that don't allow for fine technique or thinking too much, everyone is equal. Pictures emerge that are fun, unique, interesting, sometimes strange but always vibrant and personal. Here's your chance to take part in the Bad Art revolution - dare you do your worst?

SAMANTHA RAMSAY. Static exhibition.
Samantha Ramsay is a fine artist whose work is initially inspired by cities, architectural structures and building plans. With an aim to create works to excite and stimulate rather than painting from literal observations. Some pieces border between painting and sculpture; with angles of jutting out wood, reworked layers of oils, gloss and fabrics, experimentation with the physicality of paint. Then de-constructing areas back to reveal raw canvas beneath the complex surface - a process of construction and de-construction.

Monday 4th April - Saturday 17th April.
ADAM CLARKE. Two week artist in residence. Since graduating in 2006 from a BA Fine Art, Adam has continued to investigate a number of strands within his practice; namely painting, drawing and critical theory. Formally trained as a painter, of late his studio practice has focused heavily upon drawing. It is belief that his emerging interest in ‘time’ and its bearing upon work has led him to drawing. Adam will be working on a large scale practicing formal exercises such as line, form and colour.

DM Pop-Up Shop is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by emerging artist James Adair.The artist’s current work can be described as a visual splendour, loosely derived from flora and fauna. His vibrant and bold use of colour and patterns create work that is as much playful and free as it is organised and rhythmic.

James will be artist in residence here at pop up shop from Thurs 4th March until Saturday 22nd March in our exhibition space. There you will be able to meet and see James at work creating a series of new pieces. Painting directly on to original 60s/70s floral wallpaper and a series of beautifully painted canvases are just some of the works that will be on show.

For a limited time only these new works will be on sale here at DM Pop-Up Shop with an art sale on Saturday 20th March at super affordable prices.

For a limited period of two months Designers Marketplace has the opportunity to move into empty property space within Middlesbrough town centre taking its usual ‘one day market’ format a step further.

Throughout March and April regional artists and designers are offered the exciting opportunity to sell and promote their wares inside the shop for one flat rate per week. No commission is taken on sold goods.

Continuing its work on the promotion and support of regional creative businesses, Designers Marketplace Two Month Pop-Up Shop will also be presenting a mixture exciting events such as open photography competitions, rotating art exhibitions, design exhibitions, art-jams, workshops, portfolio sell-offs and seminars. The store will open its doors as an active, stimulating and exciting space to spend time in. So keep you’re eyes peeled for weekly event invites! Designers Marketplace will be advertising this event in local press and hopes to continue attracting its following of over a thousand visitors.

We will be selling high end designer maker products such as...FASHION . ACCESSORIES . ART . PRINTS . PHOTOGRAPHY . INTERIOR PRODUCTS . TEXTILES . JEWELLERY . ILLUSTRATIONS . GRAPHIC PRODUCTS . SELLING IN STORE:

• One initial payment of £40 for your first week, which is the same price of a stall at our usual one day market. If you wish to sell for a longer period of time the rate is reduced down to quater of the initial payment, per week. No commision is taken on sold wares.

• The shop will be run by staff to look after your wares, just as a normal shop would be run.• There is no minimum or maximum time frame on how long you can to sell for over the two month period. You may pull out whenever you want.

• No commission will be taken on the products you sell, just a flat rate each week. The amount of space you are allocated will depend on the type and size of product you sell. I.e. a table top surface for jewellery, set measured wall space for artwork, rail for fashion etc... Details will be given upon request or booking.

Planned opening is for Monday 1st March for two months. If you want to secure a place please email at your earliest convenience so we do not miss this opportunity to retail as the Designers Marketplace collective with Middlesbrough Council. Having just returned from a two week hard earned break, this is the first chance we've had chance to wish all of our fans, followers and buyers a very merry Christmas and happy new year! We'd like to thank you all for the support over the past year since the market began running in November 2008, may there be many more years of supporting new creative businesses to come!

We would also like to thank everyone who turned up for our Christmas market at Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt on Sunday 29th November....it was a hugely successful day with 1,100 visitors and all 47 stall holders selling most of their wares! And to top the day off we even had an impromptu visit from LA metal band, Eagles of Death Metal who started their Christmas shopping before jetting back off to California...snapshots below!

Plans for next year are underway and we have many exciting developments including entering into the world of 'pop-up shop' and moving into online retailing and representation of the Designers Marketplace vendors and products. News will start to go out throughout the month of January so keep your eyes peeled!

Well we are just about to wrap up another year of Designers Marketplace trading! May there be many more to come. Next years dates are still in the process of being booked. So far we have three confirmed dates and venues, but as soon as we know where our other pit stops will be, we will let you all know. At the moment you can book for July and Dec 2010 dates only.

MARCH & APRIL 2010 - For the months of March and April Designers Marketplace will be changing its format slightly and entering into the world of 'pop-up shop'. We will be moving into (big) empty property space within Middlesbrough town centre, and our work on the promotion and support of regional creative businesses and the retailing of products will continue. Not only will the space be used for retail, but a series of weekly creative events are set to take place inside empty property making it an active, stimulating and exciting hub throughout the whole duration of our stay.

As a market vendor you will still be able to 'rent' your space for various periods of time in a mixed number of ways. The finishing touches are still being made to the proposal and the following details will be getting released early January:

What creative events and exciting happenings will be taking place inside the empty unit
How you can get involved with the project on a number of different levels, learn new skills and also help promote your own creative business through the project.

Has been working within the greetings and lifestyle art industries for over 12 years, supplying and designing for stores such as John Lewis, Liberty, Marks & Spencer, Heals and lifestyle stores. Vicky's independent wedding stationary business is just about to featured in Wedding Magazine as one of the top ten wedding stationers in the UK.

"I am extremely excited about exhibiting at The Designers Market Place in November with a commitment to supporting and attending the events through to 2010 and beyond. I am aiming to use this forum to showcase new designs and products related to the gift and interior market before they are launched on the web site & my (developing) online ‘paper store’".

Graduated this year from Cleveland College of Art and Design, with a background in printed and embroidered textiles. Since graduating Holly has won international awards such as Textprint 09, providing her the opportunity to exhibit and sell designs at the international fashion trade show Indigo in Paris. Holly now works on a freelance basis for the brands Victorias Secrets and Hugo Boss, as well as producing one off pieces for Samantha Shaw in London and fashion designer Avshalom Gur.
Holly's personal brand is a collection of bespoke statement jewellery pieces, one off hand printed scarves and exclusive prints and embroideries. Holly can personalise commisioned pieces creating the perfect colour, fabric and style whether it is an elegant piece for your wedding, or a bold party statement.

"I believe that the highly renowned Designers Marketplace is a great platform to build contacts, buyers and expand, develop and promote my brand".

C L A I R E A B A K E R

Claire A Baker is a local textile designer and maker who works from her studio in Stockton-on-Tees. She exhibits regularly both nationally and internationally. Claire, a member of Designed and Made in Newcastle, recently showcased her most recent product at 'Design Event' at the Baltic in October; a beautiful bag made from vintage French fabrics which incorporates a plethora of accessories including jewellery pieces.
Some of Claire’s work has been selected by the World Crafts Council for the European Prize for Applied Arts and will be included in an exhibition in Mons, Belgium at the end of November 2009. Claire is currently setting up her own label, ‘Line Dry’ which is a nostalgic collection of textile accessories for fashion and the home. At the next Designers Marketplace Claire will be market testing a number of her new products and would welcome comments and opinions of her work.

"I particularly enjoy the Designers Marketplace as it is a hive of activity and an all round social experience, the atmosphere is wonderful and it is an excellent event for meeting other designers together with regular and new clients. It is a world away from the traditional craft fair and shows high quality work from the designers of our region".

R A C H A E L T A Y L O R

Originally from the Wirral, Merseyside, Rachael graduated from the University of Leeds in 2005, with a BA (Hons) in Textile & Fashion Design. Awarded 1st prize in the Janome creative competition 2006, for a layered paper skirt design, Rachael specializes in surface pattern design, developing a signature style of layering & textures. Having designed for one of the UK's leading greetings card brands for two years, Rachael has now started to focus on her own label with clients in the UK & USA. From design studios to private buyers in the art, ceramics, interior, fashion, greetings & marketing industries. Rachael has also recently had her work published in the current design book 'Patterns' by Drusilla Cole. Four pieces of her work have also been selected for the forthcoming 'Print & Pattern' book which will be out in 2010.

"Attending the Designers Marketplace provides me with direct customer feedback which is great for the development of the label. The day is always very enjoyable as you get to meet and interact with some interesting people".

Designers Marketplace Pop-Up Shop

Since November last year the Designers Marketplace has moved on and developed faster than we could have imagined. With a following of over 80 super talented artists and designers some travelling as far from London, Edinburgh, Derbyshire and Cumbria just to attend. Plans are now underway to expand the opportunities provided to the loyal followers of the market.

Designers Marketplace is planning a move into retail under the new scheme and concept of 'pop-up shop'. In addition to the markets which currently run on a quarterly basis, the more permanent space will be within Middlesbrough town centre and sell works by artists and designers from around the region. Products on sale will be exclusive to non-commercial designer maker products and artwork.
The shop will also be used as a gallery space with rotational exhibitions on a regular basis, again representing local artsists, illustrators and photographers. Developments will be underway before the end of the year.

This month you will be seeing the best line up of talent yet, 40 different artists and designers coming from as far afield as Glasgow, London and Derbyshire, giving you the chance to buy high end design products minus the gallery and boutique mark ups.
